More than 175 000 Gauteng matrics to write finals in ‘one of the largest’ exam processes in SA

  • Matric finals kick off on Wednesday and 175 599 candidates are anticipated to write in Gauteng.
  • The exams might be written at 1 004 examination centres, together with eight prisons.
  • Security preparations have been put in place to safely handle the distribution and assortment of question papers and answer sheets.

At least 175 599 candidates in Gauteng will write this year’s matric finals, that are scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

Of these, 132 887 are full-time pupils and 42 712 are part-time candidates.

“This is an increase of 17.55 percent from 2020, [when] a total of 149 385 enrolled to sit for the exams,” Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi mentioned on Sunday.

Gauteng’s Class of 2021 had the highest enrolment quantity ever.

The full-time candidates embrace 7 979 candidates who’ve been progressed from Grade 11 to Grade 12.

The exams might be written at 1 004 examination centres, together with eight prisons.

Lesufi mentioned safety preparations have been put in place to safely handle the distribution and assortment of question papers and answer sheets. 

He added: 

The province is operating one of the largest examination processes in the nation after KwaZulu-Natal. In this regard, we may have printed 2 171 915 question papers for the period of the examination course of. We have ensured that we improve safety preparations round the printing of question papers as a method of mitigating human error and different vulnerabilities.

Thirty marking centres have been accepted and 12 889 markers have been appointed, in addition to an extra 2 514 examination assistants who will function high quality assurers of marked scripts to be sure that there are not any errors in the computing of pupils’ marks.

Regarding on-line faculty placements for Grade 1 and Grade 8 pupils subsequent year, 123 752 placement provides have been made obtainable.

Of these, 47 906 candidates have accepted provides and have been positioned. 

Lesufi mentioned some mother and father have been “double dipping,” hoping that their kids could be positioned at a faculty they like.

“Our records show that 75 846 applicants received offers but have not yet accepted them. We urge parents, especially those who did not receive a placement offers via SMS, to log onto www.gdeadmissions.gov.za to check the status of their applications and accept an offer (or offers) if available. Offers may be accepted provisionally, while further offers are awaited or accepted as final. Once an offer is accepted as final, no further offers will be made.”

The placement of pupils continues till 30 November.
